1 Timothy 1

^{1 /} Or, ordinance.

^{2 a} So called because he followed the simplicitie of the Gospel.

^{3 !} He exhorteth Timotheus to waite vpon his office, namely to se that nothing be taught but Gods worde, &c.

^{5 b} Because these questionistes preferred their curious fables to all other knowledge, & beautified them with the Law, as if thei had bene the verie Law of God, S. Paul sheweth that the end of Gods Law is loue, which cannot be without a good conscience, nether a good conscience without faith, nor faith without the worde of God: so their doctrine which is an occasion of contention is worth nothing.

^{5 /} Or, of the Law.

^{5 !} Declaring that faith, with a good conscience, charitie & edificacion are the end thereof.

^{7 f} He declareth to Timothie the excellent force of Gods Spirit in them whome he hathe chosen to beare his worde, althogh before they were Gods vtter enemies, to encourage him in this battel that he shulde fight against all infideles & hypocrites.

^{9 d} Suche as onely delite in sinning.

^{9 c} Whose hearts Gods Spirit doeth direct to do that willingly which the Law requireth: so that their godlie affection is to them as a Law without further constraint.

^{10 e} Which steale away children, or seruants.

^{13 g} Not knowing that I foght against God.

^{14 h} Which chased away infidelitie.

^{14 i} Which ouercame creulitie.

^{15 /} Or, faithful & assured.

^{17 k} He brasteth forthe into these godlie affections, considering Gods great mercie toward him.

^{18 l} It appeareth that the vocacion of Timothie was approued by notable prophecies, which then were reueiled in the primatiue Church as Paul & Barnabas by the oracle were appointed to go to the Gentiles.

^{19 m} That is, sounde doctrine.

^{20 n} Excommunicate, & cast out of the Church.

^{20 !} And admonisheth of Himeneus and Alexander.
